What to look for in a robot vacuum

Mapping, suction, hair, and the maintenance nobody mentions before you buy.

A robot vacuum is a small daily helper, not a replacement for a proper vacuum. Buy it to keep floors reasonable between real cleanings and it will earn its place.

Mapping

Models that map the home clean in straight lines and can be told which rooms to skip. Random-pattern models are cheaper and fine for a single open room, frustrating anywhere else.

Hair and pets

If anyone in the house has long hair or there is a pet, the brush design matters more than the suction number. Rubber rollers tangle far less than bristle brushes.

Height and edges

Measure the gap under your sofa and bed. A robot that cannot get under them cleans where you already see the dust.

Maintenance

Bins need emptying, filters need washing, brushes need clearing. Self-empty docks reduce the first task only. Check the price of replacement filters and rollers before you buy; some brands make those very expensive.
